John 1-13 and the Torah Sedarim of the first and second years of the Nisan and first year of the Tishri Cycles

Return to Index or The Gospel of John and the Lectionary

This is a drawn from C. T. Ruddick, Jr, "The Pentateuch Background of the Fourth Gospel", an unpublished study which he sent to me in 1977 or 1978.  It correlates John's content and Greek to the content and Septuagintal Greek of the corresponding sedarim of the first and second year Nisan and Tishri cycle readings of the Palestinian synagogue triennial lectionary.  As with his work on Mark, many of the apparent vocabulary parallels by themselves bear very little weight because the vocabulary is too commonplace.  But the content parallels are often striking.  This has enabled me to build on it, both for John 1-13 and John 14-20.  (Correlations which seem especially cogent are highlighted in red or blue)
